Biography

Dr. Giuseppe Bertoni graduated in Agricultural Sciences in 1965 from the Faculty of Agriculture of Piacenza, he was first Volunteer Assistant (1965/68), then in charge (1969/73) and then Assistant Ordinary of Special Zootechnics. He has been a full professor since 1983 (1st level since 1986). He is currently the holder of the course of Animal Physiology and director of the Institute of Zootechnics of the Faculty of Agriculture of Piacenza. In the years from 1969 to 1973, he completed medium-term internships at British research institutes. The research activity, which resulted in over 450 printed works, of which over 350 were of an experimental nature, mainly concerned the evaluation of the chemical-nutritional characteristics of ruminant food, the study of ruminal metabolism, the mineral nutrition of ruminants, ‘ the endocrinology of ruminants with particular regard to the interconnections with nutrition and the repercussions in terms of milk production and quality as well as in its connections with the fertility and health of dairy farms. He has developed – in over 20 years of work – the so-called Piacenza Metabolic Profile for the diagnosis of dietary errors in cattle, sheep, and dairy buffaloes. He was also interested in feeding sheep and milk buffaloes. He has extended his research to the study of endotoxins and inflammatory processes of various origins, which cause endocrine-metabolic alterations and reduced performance. He collaborates in the identification of biotechnological tools to characterize genetic markers of useful traits in cattle and the genetic responses to feeding (nutrigenomics). It now deals with the causes of changes in the welfare of dairy cows and the criteria for its evaluation; also of a more accurate definition of the Mediterranean diet and the role of animal products in it. Currently, he teaches, in the Specialized Degree in Animal Production, Animal Physiology, Physiopathology of Nutrition, and Milk Quality.
He is a member of the board of directors, an auditor, of the European Federation of Zootechnics (EAAP / FEZ).
He is a member of the Council of the Scientific Association of Animal Productions.
He was part of the working group “Metabolic and reproductive disorders of dairy cows (Panel Animal Health and Welfare, EFSA) for the EFSA Opinion on Risk assessment on the subject of well-being.
