Oral & Systemic Connection: A Brief Overview
Dr. Iquebal Hasan is presently a Director of Emergency Care Clinic and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine Faculty at East Carolina University.
Dr. Hasan grew up in India and completed his dental education there. After graduating, he was in private practice and worked as faculty. He also had success as Director of a family-owned surgical center in India. In the US, he completed two years of GPR, a first-year from Meharry Medical College, SoDM, and a chief residency year from Carolinas Medical Center where he stayed and completed an Oral Medicine residency. He joined the University of Kentucky in 2013 as Assistant Professor then went on to become Division Chief of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis & Oral Radiology. In 2016, he was offered a position at ECU School of Dental Medicine, which he saw as an opportunity to establish Oral Medicine in the School as well as provide care to people of Eastern NC.
Since becoming a faculty, he won teaching awards, acknowledgments, and honors and even featured in North Carolina Health news for his services to the region. Cases diagnosed and treated by him have been presented at national & international conferences. He has also been a keynote speaker at the annual conference of a leading healthcare insurance company. He has been an invited speaker at different levels, which has included international conferences, medical school, and residency programs. He serves on several committees at the school and university levels. Nationally he plays the role of mentor for the American Academy of Oral Medicine for students, residents, and dentists planning a career and Oral Medicine and he is in the Graduate Awards Committee of AAOM.
Dr. Hasan started Interdisciplinary Oral Medicine Study Club at ECU which is an Interprofessional University Students Organization. This is the first student organization of its kind which is so successful. Currently, it has over one hundred paid members from across campus and is growing each day. The organization’s activities include speakers from all over the world, a monthly journal club, and fundraising for cancer patients. This year alone they raised over $19000 for dental care of cancer patients to improve their quality of life and help them get back to health.
He received Professional Memberships from Member Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation, Awareness Ambassador for Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation, American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Dental Education Association, and American Dental Association.
